MF Lurøy - Recoating & pressure testing firelines

On MF Lurøy, we carried out complete recoating of four box coolers and pressure testing of the vessel’s fireline system at Westcon Helgeland.

  • Vessel:

    MF Lurøy

  • Date:

    April-May 2023

  • Scope:

Recoating of box coolers and pressure testing of firelines

Background

During scheduled maintenance of MF Lurøy, structural damage and coating degradation were discovered on the high-temperature side of all four box coolers.

In addition, Boreal wanted to perform pressure testing of the vessel’s fireline system to identify and repair possible leaks before re-commissioning.

We were mobilised from Bergen with full blasting and coating equipment, as well as pressure testing gear and consumables. Work was carried out at Westcon Helgeland in close collaboration with the yard and the vessel’s technical crew .

Work performed

Recoating of box coolers

All four box coolers were removed and sandblasted in a controlled habitat outside the dock hall. After cleaning with air and water to remove sand residue, the surfaces were coated with Säkatonit Extra AR-F.

Pressure testing of firelines

We conducted pressure testing of the vessel’s sprinkler/fireline system. All nozzles were disassembled, cleaned and marked to ensure correct reinstallation. Each line was isolated and tested separately with water pressure at 2.5–3.0 bar over a 30-minute period. Leaks were identified using spray marking, after which the yard performed necessary welding before re-testing. In total, 16 leaks were located and repaired – mainly in weld seams, with a few in the pipes themselves .

Results

The recoating restored full corrosion protection to the box coolers, ensuring reliable thermal performance.

The pressure testing verified the integrity of the fireline system and ensured full operational readiness.

It was noted that the coating damage likely stemmed from trapped air pockets in the seawater chest. This will be investigated further to prevent recurrence. Despite the coolers being only two years old, the coating damage was unusually extensive compared to previous units that lasted over 20 years without similar issues .

Through efficient coordination and close cooperation with Boreal and Westcon Helgeland, we completed the full scope within the planned timeframe. Both the recoated coolers and the repaired fireline system are now back in service, with improved reliability and protection.
