Project summary

We were contracted by Lürssen Yacht to chemically clean 12 Hydroniq rack coolers on board Shackleton. The coolers had been exposed to muddy water and required thorough internal cleaning before reinstallation.

How we worked

Thanks to an efficient yard setup, we started the same afternoon we arrived. Initially, the first two coolers were cleaned in a chemical bath. As operating both wall crane and forklift simultaneously proved inefficient, we switched to an open-top IBC tank for the remaining 10 units, cleaning each cooler in two phases by flipping them upside down halfway through. All units were sealed with blind flanges during treatment and flushed thoroughly after cleaning.

Results

The chemical process worked exactly as planned. Mud contamination dissolved quickly, and no marine growth was present. The project concluded without delays due to excellent support from the yard and optimal logistics.

What we used

  • NGP Rack Cleaner (custom chemical formula)
  • Blind flanges for sealing
  • Chemical bath and IBC open-top container
  • Wall crane and forklift
  • Clean water for rinsing

Reflections

This was a well-executed and efficient job. The initial use of a crane setup was quickly adjusted to a safer and more practical method. Changing the chemicals multiple times ensured consistent cleaning results. No marine growth simplified the process significantly. The cooperation with Lürssen was excellent.
