Project summary

We were tasked with the full service of RFA Proteus’ cooling systems during her stay at Cammel Laird. The job involved dismantling and chemically cleaning 14 rack coolers and 2 pleat coolers, as well as replacing gaskets, bolts and connected pipework.

Throughout the project, we also cleaned protection units and replaced all seawater suction pipes, delivering a complete upgrade of the vessel’s cooler systems.

How we worked

After floor plates were removed for access, we dismantled the coolers and associated systems with the help of the yard’s rigging team. Once onshore, we HP-washed the coolers and immersed them in a chemical bath using NGP Rack Cleaner (1:3 dilution) to dissolve marine fouling.

Following the cleaning process, the coolers were brought into our workshop. We replaced all worn bolts with new stainless-steel ones, fitted new gaskets, and ensured all gasket surfaces were properly prepared.

In addition, we handled dismantling and cleaning of five protection units and replaced all suction pipes. All pipe systems were reinstalled with new insulation bolts and gaskets.

Despite a forklift accident involving cooler 349, we resolved the issue promptly by replacing the damaged frame and keeping the project on track.

Results

RFA Proteus now operates with a fully refreshed cooling system. All rack and pleat coolers have been cleaned, reassembled with new gaskets and bolts, and pressure tested. The sea chests did not require repainting this time but should be reviewed at the next docking.

What we used

  • NGP Rack Cleaner Fluid (1:3 with fresh water)
  • HP washers and chemical bath
  • Stainless-steel bolts and new gaskets
  • New suction piping and ventilation kits

Reflections

This was a smooth and efficient collaboration with the crew of Proteus and the yard team. We appreciate the trust placed in us, and we’re looking forward to supporting future dockings in cooperation with Hydroniq.
