On behalf of Boreal, we carried out a complete recoating and service of the box coolers on MF Lovund during docking at Tersan Havyard, Leirvik. After inspection, we recommended full recoating of the four medium-sized NRF box coolers. The units were dismantled by yard personnel, transported to our workshop at Løfallstrand, and serviced in line with our procedures.

Scope of work

• Cleaning, including high-pressure washing and chemical tank treatment with MarineFluid™
  
• Sandblasting according to ISO 8501-1 standards
  
• Two-layer coating with SÄKATONIT extra AR-F using flooding method
  
• Surface preparation and coating of gasket areas and tube sheets
  
• Flushing of all tubes to ensure clean flow and performance
  
• Hydrostatic pressure testing according to ISO 16812:2019
  

During testing, a leak was discovered in one cooler at the ICAF anode pipe connection. Together with MPE Cathodic, we carried out a repair and ensured that all four coolers passed pressure testing after corrective actions.

Additional work

In addition to the recoating, we flushed the seawater side of the plate cooler and the heater piping system for the main engine’s chillwater. Both systems were treated with MarineDescaler™, an environmentally friendly and non-toxic product approved under NEMS/HOCNF and CEFAS standards.

Results and recommendations

All coolers were recoated with two protective layers, giving them strong resistance against galvanic activity in the sea chest. After service, the coolers are in good operational condition and ready for reliable use. We recommend careful cleaning at the next docking to extend coating lifetime.
