Project summary

NGP was contracted to fully recoat 10 box coolers for the vessel Firda Eir during its conversion from PSV to wellboat. The scope included surface preparation, mechanical adjustments, coating, and final verification at Norse Shipyard in Turkey.

How we worked

We began with HP washing and mechanical scraping, followed by full sandblasting with Garnet Mesh 30/60. Each cooler was then pressure tested, and several required plugging or re-piping. Two coolers also needed glued tube supports due to vibration risk. The coating was applied using a flooding method with Säkatonit Extra AR-F in two layers, with 24 hours of curing between each coat. Flanges were grounded and cleaned before reinstallation.

Results

All coolers were completed and coated within the agreed timeframe. Some flanges required final touch-up due to airborne dust during curing, which we resolved after demobilisation. Despite challenges with the open worksite, the project was delivered to a high standard and met client expectations.

What we used

  • Säkatonit Extra AR-F (820 kg)
  • Garnet Mesh 30/60 (2000 kg)
  • HP washer, 300 bar

Reflections

This was a complex and hands-on project combining technical precision with onsite adjustments. Limited paint environment and unexpected field conditions were handled effectively, and we’ve since improved our internal QC routines. A solid delivery backed by a strong collaboration between NGP and the yard.
