Project summary

NGP was assigned to recoat the box coolers on Bourbon Liberty 308 during drydocking in Cartagena. The scope included full surface preparation and coating of five large box coolers, while three smaller units were cleaned and spray-painted due to limited time.

How we worked

Coolers were cleaned by high-pressure washing and manual scraping, followed by chemical treatment with a 15% WSI descaling solution. Five large coolers were sandblasted using Garnet Mesh 80. One cooler sustained damage during transport, resulting in 15 tubes being plugged. Recoating was carried out with Heresite P-413 phenolic epoxy in two layers. The three smaller coolers were sprayed with two layers of SigmaCover 380 due to schedule constraints.

Results

All coolers were coated and delivered according to plan. The damaged unit was secured and passed pressure testing after plugging. Surfaces were masked and coated in line with NGP’s procedures. The team adapted well to site conditions and time limitations.

Reflections

This project combined two coating strategies to meet tight deadlines while maintaining quality. The use of phenolic epoxy provides strong protection against corrosive conditions, and spray coating on the smaller units ensured timely delivery without compromising coverage.
